Eight of us were lucky enough to gate-crash a friend\u2019s mini-honeymoon in the Masai Mara. All organised, meals prepared, and we get driven around to see the game \u2013 complete luxury in contrast to our usual make-it-up-as-you-go-along approach, two-minute noodles for dinner, and self-drive game viewing. <\/p>\n

We had left the car in Cape Town and flown to Kenya for our friend\u2019s wedding and Masai Mara trip. After four days of festivities with a few hundred Kenyans, we were ready for the wide open plains of the Mara. We had been a little sceptical in the past of all-inclusive camps. The tents we had seen in many were often just a larger version of our own roof tent, and the meals no better than the Thai green curries I had occasionally been whipping up. We were looking forward to seeing what they were really like.<\/p>\n

The good news is that we certainly weren\u2019t disappointed\u2026. in fact, it all rapidly became a highlight of our trip. The camps and food were beautiful, and importantly the guides were excellent. One of the tented camps had no permanent structures and could be packed up in day. Incredible how they were able to produce such fabulous meals for us three times a day – the logistics of getting supplies delivered into the middle of the bush would be challenging enough, let alone preparing and serving meals. Our second camp had a 1920s theme and even had an old 4×4 Rolls Royce from that era (fitted with a modern Land Cruiser engine, of course!) <\/p>\n

Our guides continually amazed us. Their ability to simultaneously look for signs of lions in the bush, comment on the lively sounds of a nearby bird, and drive across the rough Mara terrain had us all contemplating the possibility of doing a field guide course.  There was so much to learn about the bush, the animal behaviour and the beautiful birds. One guide saw a cheetah sitting on a rock 1 km away and it was still there when we drove up to it! \u201cHow can I train my eyes to look for animals in the distance,\u201d<\/em> I asked. \u201cYou must know the terrain and then look for unusual shapes and movement,\u201d<\/em> Dowdy, our guide replied. \u201cSee the rocks here? They all have rounded tops. That one is more pointed. And cheetahs like sitting on these rocks to look around.\u201d<\/em> Easier said than done.<\/p>\n

We had beautiful breakfasts in the bush and G&Ts made by the Masai guides\/barmen. (They weren\u2019t really all Masai as I found out, but shhh\u2026. don\u2019t let the other tourists know!) But even the most luxurious of 4x4s can break down, and at the most inconvenient time. Ven helped our Masai guides with a bit of bush mechanics whilst the rest of us kept a look out for the lions we had been looking for, hoping we wouldn\u2019t see them just yet!<\/p>\n

There was plenty of game in the Mara, and we had never seen so many cats \u2013 leopards, lions, cheetah! We saw a couple of lions just as they had finished mating. \u201cWhat a shame we weren\u2019t here a few minutes ago.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t worry,\u201d<\/em> William said, \u201cthey\u2019ll start again soon.\u201d<\/em> And they did, again and again, every 20 minutes or so for the next few hours. But blink and you\u2019ll miss it as it only lasts a few seconds each time!<\/p>\n

Those of a nervous disposition may want to skip to the next post as we saw two young cheetahs bring down a baby Thompson\u2019s gazelle, and a buffalo being eaten by 13 lions!
