Mozambique/Malawi – Islands in the Sun, Part 2

We decided that a 400km detour inland to cross from Tanzania into Mozambique would be better than strapping our car to three canoes and taking the river crossing across the border. There used to be a ferry, but it sank a few years ago and now the makeshift canoe option is offered by the local fishermen. The starting price apparently is a few hundred dollars, and what you actually pay depends on your negotiating skills! Continue reading

Tanzania – The Ditches of Dodoma

The Tanzanian traffic police have been unexpectedly friendly. We were expecting to be stopped for bribes (or rather a request for “a soda”, the more discreet way of asking) many times. The occasions we were stopped, the conversation on where we’ve come from and were going to was very polite. Ven was even able to sweet talk his way out of a speeding fine: “we like your country so much, we have such wonderful memories and it would be a shame if this was one of our last ones….” etc etc… Continue reading

East Africa – We’re Fuula Fuula!

I’m going to invent a new Swahili phrase: ‘fuula fuula’, meaning ‘we’re full’. I do this because the phrase does not seem to currently exist in Swahili. Or at least the ticket collectors of the matatus and dalla dallas (share taxis in Kenya and Tanzania) don’t seem to know it. Just when you think no-one else can squeeze in, another two people and a chicken get into the van, already at three times official capacity (not counting the chicken). Continue reading
